Hiring The Right Home Inspector

January 13, 2010

A home purchase is probably the biggest investment a person will ever make in their lifetime. Hiring a qualified home inspector is an important step you can take to protect yourself from buying a lemon. However, finding the right home inspector can prove to be a challenge.

Did you know that  in province of Ontario any person can call themselves a home inspector? No licence is needed, no certification required and there is no official regulating body that keeps tabs on home inspectors. So how do you know you’re hiring a good one?

The first thing you need to do even before starting to look for a home is interview multiple home inspectors the same way an employer would interview a candidate. So when you do find your dream home you will be ready and not fumbling through the phone book at the last-minute.Don’t be afraid to ask for references. If he or she is legit they will be more than happy to tell you about their past clients.

Second, it’s always a good idea to ask if they have a  background in construction. Inspectors that have started off as a licensed construction trade will usually have a better grasp on the fundamentals of home inspection.

Thirdly, make sure they are fully insured and insist that they produce an insurance certificate. Also it might be a good idea to review their service contract and understand what their terms are.

remember every industry has a handful of bad apples. It’s your job to weed them out and find the best of the crop.
