Renovating Your Home

January 13, 2010

Renovating your current home can be a smart move, however you must spend your money wisely to see a return on those improvements.

After deciding on a budget you will want to take a look around and pick out any changes you want to make. It may help to hire a qualified home inspector and or energy auditor to give you a detailed report on the life span of important elements such as the roof, windows and other critical components of your home. You don’t want to blow the budget on non essential upgrades if your furnace needs replacing. For this purpose we’ll say that your home’s structure and mechanical components are in great condition. You want to make sure that the renovations you choose to make will add real value to your home. Upgrading to a granite counter top in the kitchen, or adding cornice moulding and pot lighting will payoff when reselling. However upgrading existing hardwood floors that are in good condition for another style or colour may not. Remember, a simple neutral fresh coat of paint is the usually the most affordable renovation and will always add value.

Whatever kind of renovation you decide on to make, be sure that you have it professionally done with licenced and insured contractors, or you may end up spending more than you planned if things go wrong.
